Axemen sweep home opener weekend

The Capital Region Axemen moved to 4-1 on the season after winning both games during their home opener weekend.

Saturday was Capital Region Axemen Day in Ottawa and the Axemen did not want to disappoint the large home crowd.  Players from Gloucester and Nepean Minor Lacrosse were on hand to present the Mayoral Proclamation to the Axemen and participated in the ceremonial face off to kick off the game day festivities.

The Axemen came out strong versus the Caughnawaga Indians (0-5), putting on a strong offensive showing.  The home team out shot the Indians 74-21 en route to a 17-3 victory.  Todd Chapman and Jordan Joncas led the scoring with three goals each.  Chris Chuback was solid in goal, allowing 3 goals on 21 shots.

The boys in plaid returned to Howard Darwin Arena Sunday night for the second half of their home opener weekend.  The St. Regis Braves were in town looking to avenge an earlier 12-6 loss to the Axemen on May 11th.

This was a tight, hard fought game from the opening face off.  The Braves opened the scoring in the first, but the Axemen struck back quickly, picking up a 3-1 lead.  At the end of the first, the Braves had pushed themselves back into the game and the teams started the second tied 3-3.

The second period was just as tight as the first as neither team was able to pull ahead by more than one goal.  The teams traded goals and went to the locker room tied at seven.  The third period saw the Axemen strike for four goals in a row to take the biggest lead of the game.  The Braves made a late period push but it wasn’t enough as they fell 11-9 to the home team.

Mark Vradenburg (#92) led the Axemen with 4G and 2A.  Curtis Singleton added 4 assists while Brett Perras stopped 35 between the pipes.
