Axemen loan out goaltender James
Jordan to Mohawks, remain unbeaten
in 2018
By Adam D’Agostino
You could be forgiven if you looked the Kahnawake Mohawks net during the game between the
Mohawks and the Capital Region Axemen on June 23, 2018 and thought that the goaltender looked
somewhat familiar. The Mohawks goalie for the evening was none other than Axemen back-up #55
James Jordan, who had to be loaned out to Kahnawake for the game, as they were unable to dress one
of their regular goalies for the game. They also had trouble dressing enough runners as well, managing
to show up with only nine players in total for the QSLL match.
As could be expected, nine runners is simply not enough to compete with the Axemen, who have rolled
over everyone in 2018 on their quest to make it back to the President’s Cup tournament in August.
Saturday’s game was no different, with the Axemen handing the Mohawks a 14-6 loss, to move the
Axemen to 5-0 on the year, and the Mohawks to 0-5.
If any Mohawks players were worried that Jordan wouldn’t give 100% playing for an opposing team,
they needn’t have lost any sleep. That fear quickly dissipated as the Axemen came out firing in the first
period, and Jordan was managing to turn almost everything aside. Despite the fact that most players
would have more practice shooting on Jordan than any other goalie they might have faced, they could
not seem to figure him out in the first period. He would up making 20 saves in the first period alone,
helping the Mohawks go into intermission with a 3-2 lead. Jordan would face 20+ shots each period of
the game, and ended up making a total of 60 saves on the evening; this was the highest shot output for
the Axemen of the season so far. Jordan will be sure to thank them on Wednesday at practice.
The Mohawks were able to keep up in the first period, but (expectedly) began to get tired once the
midpoint of the second period hit. The floodgates opened for the Axemen following a fast-break tally
from #77 Brandon Fournier, which triggered a run of 7 straight goals for the Axemen. The Mohawks
were able to stop the bleeding with two goals of their own to close out the second period, but with the
score 10-5 in favour of the Axemen at that point, it was too little, too late.
With no one on the Mohawks, except for Jordan, putting up much of a fight in the third period, the
Axemen would add 4 more goals for good measure to close out with a 14-6 win.
Leaders for the Axemen this game were #55 Spencer Corkery and #92 Mark Vradenburg; each were
able to put up three goals and three assists. With 21 points in five games so far, Vradenburg is currently
tied for the team lead in points with #22 Blake Kenny.
The Axemen travel to Windsor, Quebec on Sunday, June 24 to face the Eagles.
